A Heartfelt Holiday Surprise: Student Messages that Brightened Our Season

December 29, 2025

This holiday season, The Landon at Lake Highlands experienced a wave of joy that our residents will remember for years to come. Elementary, Middle, and High School students from across Dallas, TX colored pictures and wrote personal messages filled with warmth, cheer, and kindness, that were hand delivered by Trae Jacobs, a local man who started this initiative.

Trae’s Story

Trae expressed that this initiative stems from his own childhood, where he met his best friend while visiting a senior center, an 82-year-old man named Bill. He feels this unlikely friendship had a lasting impact, and believes the companionship extended Bill’s life, and that’s what he is trying to accomplish with this initiative, creating lasting connections through generations.

Connecting Generations

From colorful holiday scenes to heartfelt messages, each and every letter brought a smile, a laugh, and even some happy tears to the faces of our residents. Each note reflected thoughtfulness and created a connection that we rarely get to experience. These letters were a reminder to our residents that they are seen, valued, and not forgotten.  “It’s just knowing that…you matter. I am thinking of you. Not everybody has somebody,” said Eileen Flanagan, Executive Director of The Landon.

Next month, our residents are going to return the favor. They will spend time crafting messages filled with cheer for Trae to deliver back to the students, creating a two-way conversation connecting all ages.

The Loneliness Epidemic

The impact of loneliness among seniors is more profound than many realize. Studies have shown that social isolation and lack of human connection can affect both mental and physical health, increasing the risk of depression, anxiety, and even chronic illness. The holidays can amplify feelings of solitude, that is why gestures like these handmade letters are so powerful. In a world where loneliness has become an epidemic, small acts of kindness can truly make a difference.

A Simple Gesture with Lasting Impact

We are grateful to Trae for organizing this incredible initiative, and to each student who took the time to color a picture and craft a heartfelt message. Our residents didn’t just receive letters, they felt comfort, care, and connection. Our community feels more vibrant because of you. This simple gesture has left a lasting impact on each one of us that will be cherished for years to come.
